WCF Announces 2005 Partnership Awards

Honorees Accomplishments Assist Cocoa Communities around the World

The World Cocoa Foundation at its semi-annual Partnership meeting on October 13 presented the 2005 Partnership Awards to 5 outstanding individuals for their work to further sustainable cocoa growing in the three cocoa growing regions of the world.

This year's honorees are:

West Africa- Madame Acquah Amouan, Special Advisor to the Prime Minister in charge of raw materials, government of the Cote d'Ivoire. Mrs. Amouan has successfully chaired the Cote d'Ivoire Task Force on child labor, working closely with key stakeholders to implement a fully transparent system of labor certification in cocoa communities in Cote d'Ivoire.

Southeast Asia- Dr. Mary Melnyk, Senior Advisor for Natural Resource Management in the Asian and Near East Bureau, USAID. Dr. Melnyk was lauded for her pioneering work in developing public private partnerships to further sustainable cocoa
growing in Southeast Asia.

Latin America- Dr. Eduardo Somarriba, Research Professor in Tropical Agroforestry, Department of Agroforestry and Agroecology, CATIE, Costa Rica. Dr. Somarriba has been instrumental in bringing good agroforestry husbandry to farmers throughout Latin America, helping to make individual farms more productive while preserving the environment in and around cocoa farming areas.

Research- Dr. Carmen Suarez, INIAP, for her efforts in bringing agricultural research and technology transfer to farmers in Latin America, Ecuador and the Andean Region.

WCF Staff Award, Mr. John Long, Vice President, Corporate Affairs, The Hershey Company. The World Cocoa Foundation staff appreciates the tireless leadership of Mr. Long in growing the organization's membership and programs to truly support a sustainable cocoa economy through economic and social development and environmental conservation.
