Environmental Conservation
Grown properly, cocoa can play a positive role in protecting the environment. Cocoa grows best under the shade canopy of mature rainforest trees. A cocoa farm can provide a safe, nurturing home to many different types of animals.
But it will not happen automatically.
As part of its mission, the World Cocoa Foundation (WCF) supports efforts to protect and enhance the environment in which cocoa farmers grow their crop.
WCF-supported programs encourage farmers to depend more on biological control of pests and diseases and less on fertilizers and insecticides.
The WCF also works with partners to encourage farmers to help rebuild the rain forest by growing cacao trees as one of several crops.
