Success Story: Building Model Farms in Vietnam
Recognizing the Potential for Cocoa
Mr. Vu Quoc Huy of Binh Phuoc Province was introduced to cocoa by the SUCCESS Alliance Program in August 2005. As part of the training program, he received 200 grafted plants which he planted under the shade of his durian and mangosteen trees on his 2 hectare farm.
Recognizing the potential for cocoa in his area, Mr. Huy purchased an additional 500 seedlings later that year. When asked about his interest in growing cocoa he explained:
“I could see that growing cocoa is more secure than other crops, and that the market for the beans has good potential for the future. I want to take full advantage of the area shaded by fruit-trees in order to increase the income for my family.”
He also wants to prove to other farmers that the cocoa tree is suitable for growing in Binh Phuoc Province. His farm is one of the most technically impressive farms in Vietnam and is a model farm in the SUCCESS Alliance Program.
Applying Techniques to Become Model Farm for Ben Tre Province
Mr. Nguyen Van Lap of Ben Tre Province received commercial clonal seedlings in 2001 through the World Cocoa Foundation and GTZ funding of Nong Lam University. He was a regular participant in the training workshops conducted by Nong Lam University and assisted in the establishment of a demonstration plot in An Khanh Commune.
When Mr. Lap applied the techniques learned during the workshops, his farm flourished and his income increased through the sale of budwood, grafted seedlings and fresh pods for use in fruit juice. Under SUCCESS Alliance, Mr. Lap’s farm has became a model for Ben Tre Province and nationally.
