ACCESO: Cocoa is a Growing Business in San Martín, Peru

San Martín, Peru Farmer Field School graduates Mr. Alvis Valles Sajami and Mr. Alberto Inou Amasifuen realized the growing demand for cocoa seedlings in their area and opened their own nurseries.

Mr. Alvis Valles Sajami

Mr. Valles Sajami (far left in photo at right) is a rice farmer looking to diversify production with cocoa.  He sees great potential for cocoa and plans to eventually have more area under cocoa cultivation than rice.

He established a nursery to aid in the expansion saying, “I already have 4,000 plants.  This [the nursery] will be so important to increase my cocoa area.

I can sell planting material to other farmers in order to have a new source of income for my family.”

Mr. Alberto Inou Amasifuen

Mr. Inou Amasifuen (left, in photo at left), a member of the ACOPAGRO cooperative, established a nursery to produce cocoa and timber tree seedlings to sell to area farmers.

He has a positive outlook for his nursery business observing, “We have an increase in demand for cocoa plants in San Martín.  We expect to provide seedlings not only to our farm, but also to other farmers in expanding their production area.”

He has already increased his own cocoa production from 2 hectares to 5 hectares.  As business at the nursery increases, he is looking for additional partners to further expand seedling production.
